Day 1 at the Sea of Galilee

This afternoon, after we visited the Baptist church in Nazareth and had lunch (of falafel and shawarma!), we started a tour of Galilee. We went to the place where it is thought that Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount. Of course there was a church there (’cause Catholics build churches on everything around here) on the north shore. Inside the church, up towards the dome, there were eight stained glass pictures of the text of the beatitudes in Latin. We sat in the garden outside (it was very windy). Zoe read aloud three of the beatitudes, and I read more of the sermon from Matthew. The same spot is believed where Jesus fed the 5,000 – on the slope of the same hill.

We got some iced vanilla coffee and then went to a pier in Tiberias (on the West of the lake). We got on a boat called “Faith” and went for about a 45-minute boat ride on the Sea. It was really cool to be on the actual Sea that Jesus walked on. It was beautiful!

Our captain is an Israeli believer (Messianic Jew). Lisa Moore, the volunteer coordinator for Nazareth Village, was our tour guide today. She’ll lead us again further in to Galilee tomorrow. We also had a Village volunteer named Erin Craig (North Carolina) with us, and Don Zook (Janelle’s uncle), from [correction!] Reading, PA. His wife Robin and their son Ben will be with us tomorrow.

Zoe and I bought Sea of Galilee stones that were made into pendants. We saw lots of kitties living on the rocks near the water.

Sea of Galilee sounds like a wonderful day - loved the pictures of Uncle Eldon as a soldier, the list of 'not so great' stuff and Lily/Nina's post-film crew fastidiousness.

When my buddy Linda went to Israel last spring, she also went out on a boat in the Sea of Galilee. She said she has never really felt so very much at peace (and she hates water/boats) - it was her favorate part of her trip.

It was exciting for me (Ernie) to see that you are learning to know Don Zook from Oley. He is the youngest member of the Zook family that I grew up with at Oley church. I consider three of his older brothers (Lloyd, Merv, and Omar Jr) close friends. Omar was my supervisor for a short time at Philhaven. He and I went to several conferences together.
